R-77 - real FPS killer

Shaman

Recommended Posts

I've just done some testing.

I put 3 ship Su-30 flight 2KM in front of me, and I followed them with same speed and alt.

I gave all of those Su-30s one of the default CAP payloads that has R-77s and R-73s.

My frames from inside cockpit (max zoom out) were ~16FPS.

Now listen up.

I changed all Su-30s payloads with diffrent CAP payload that has all missiles except R-77s (it was a setup made of 73, 27ET, 27ER, 27T)

I fired up the mission again, same conditions of flight, and my FPS went up to ~35FPS, double of the previous FPS.

I switched those payloads back and forth several times, to be 100% sure that there's something wrong with R-77 model (it doesn't utilize LOD shapes maybe?)

Devs, beta-testers, please look into this issue. Probably there's more of that. I mean the problem surely is not limited to only R-77 model but some other models in the game as well.

PS. LockOn 1.2 release should be as polished as it can be. This must be truly platinum release, otherwise... I'll start black-mailing ;) Squish maximum performance of this engine by looking into things that actually screw up this performance. This really CAN be optimized.

New test

All right. I've repeated this test again.

Stable conditions:

  • Two flights sharing same route.
  • 1st flight flies in front - 3x Su-30 sharing same payload setting
  • 2nd flight follows 2km in the back - 1x Su-27 (Player flying same course, speed & alt as 1st flight)

Variables:

Su-30s flight payloads -

  • P1: R-73*2,R-77*6,ECM
  • P2: R-73*2,R-27T*2,R-27ER*2,R-27ET*2,ECM
  • P3: empty

FPS meassure is taken from the cockpit, looking straight (at Su-30s flight 2KM ahead) full zoom out.

FPS benchmark results (all graphics options are the same, though tested with two diffrent haze settings):

ADV. HAZE

P1: ~16 FPS

P2: ~33 FPS

P3: ~33 FPS

BASIC HAZE

P1: ~19 FPS

P2: ~41 FPS

P3: ~42 FPS

Yeah there are problems with model LOD. After a while when the mission gets full of debris from downed aircraft, FPS drops as well. I think we have always neglected this blaming memory leaks instead.

Not only models.

There's also problem with holes in the ground!

Bomb holes dissapear from view (are not rendered) at over ~100m range or so (which is a bit to early in my opinion).

However bullet holes (from onboard cannon, gun pods) seem to not dissapear at all which creates humongous FPS hit and lag when there are many of them in the area.

But I suppose ED already knows about this ;)

  • 4 months later...

Sven, the good news is that GG_Tharos (ED's beta tester) did forward this thread to developers, so there's some chance it will be fixed in 1.2.

Since ED released some SDK tools for creating own 3D models this bug could be fixed by some 3D artist in our community with brand new R-77 3D model - at least until 1.2 fixes it.

..or just import the current model into the editor and create more LODS. That IS the problem right? From afar, even when the missle shouldn't be rendered, it's first, highest quality LOD is being displayed, so all that is missing are the next few LOD levels up.

Creating LODS after LOD1, especially for missles, should be a few minute task.

Disso, you cannot reverse enginneer current .lom models. So community can only fix this issue by creating entirely new R-77 model.

The problem of the current R-77 could replciate itself on the new one if the technique is the same I avise to use a single 3D volume as oposed to intersecting subobjects.
