A little OT: promoting an old project team I used to belong, and donwload a new game.

I wasnt always known as Pilotasso. There was a time I worn the calsign Haderak. A couple days ago this game that was under development for half a decade finaly got released. I was involved for 2 years and eventualy left the team for lack of time (modeling and skining is time comsuming)

So here it is, a space SIM based on a classic many of you might know:

Wing commander SAGA Prologue.

Based on the graphics engine of Freespace 2, this Space Sim evolved from its realeased source code to acomodate Wing commander play aspects.

It is set arround the universe and time table of Wing commander Privateer into Wing commander 3. Hope you like it.

could you give us a little more info? Like is it arcadish or realistic? What do you do? Do you just fly around or do you have missions? Is there a good reveiw somewhere?

I'm downloading now! Is it a mod for Freespace 2, or is it stand alone?

Man, I miss those Wing Commander games so much. I don't think I've played a game since then that was as exciting as those :D

Its a stand alone, based on FS2 but with source code edited accordingly.

@Warthog: If your not familiar With Wing commander series this might be a new proposition for you. And yes its arcadish just like the original games were, but the purpose is to fly and watch the storyline unfold. Like a movie and your the star! (phrase taken out of 1992 wing commander 2).

The full game is yet to be released and will weigth over a GB. Its realy worth it because its not one of those doggy home made games, it has good grahics and good gameplay. Has Scinematic sequences and voice acting following a storyline.

On the third page of the forum link above youll find a link to download a mission editor. Its extremely versatile with almost unlimited editability for events and mission goals.

Crashes on startup for me.

check the graphics modes on the launcher executable, it has a bazilion ways to configure.

It can do OpengL or DX9, T&L etc etc, just make sure the res in 1024x768, or you may see the enemy ships off their HUD target marker.

There were problems for some people, so take a bit of patience configuring it out. Mine works for me.

The sound crashes the game. I have to run with no sound.

Regarding a possible solution I found this:

I have seen something like that before from someone here on the HLP forums though. No matter what they did, installing/uninstalling, making sure the old 1.0 dlls were gone, etc., would get it working for them. The only suggestion I had left was to recommend that they copy the openal32.dll and wrap_oal.dll files from their system32 directory directly into the game directory. And that worked. That is probably the next fix I can offer, but it should always be considered a last resort.

That proceedure isn't recommended in general, since you miss out on better OpenAL drivers which sound card makers can put out (particularly Creative, they have full hardware acceleration for their popular cards). But, it's something particular to some systems, and I don't really know what that is.

I can clearly remember when I saw Wingcomander in 1990 in a age of thirteen the first time.

I could hardly belive my eyes that this FX was possible in realtime

After that i decited to turn off the amiga and buy a 286 pc - the rest is history.

Wing Commander, isn't that the game where the main characters included luke skywalker, a female porn star(forgotten her name but she was the mechanic) and some dude with a Lions head(ain't that the guy off Tekken).:megalol: I still remember the mission where you had to fly drunk and your stick responded with oppositte inputs(still managed to nail the baddies though)awesome work you guys did with this sim:thumbup: . WC was one awesome series of games and the movies that came with it added alot too the story. Also had some good online dogfights with one of my friends using WC.

You're forgetting John Rhys-Davies (Gimli) as Paladin, Tom Wilson (Biff) as Maniac and of course Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Tolwyn!

 

Still haven't had a chance to look at this game, will do tonight. Totally looking forward to it! ;)

 

I think my favorite part of these games was the introduction of Torpedo bombing in WC2.

You worked on SAGA? Cool. I regularly visit http://www.wcnews.com for updates on several of these mods' progress.

WC Pioneer seems promising, but I really hope EA would bring the trademark back from ashes. Too bad the Privateer 3, Privateer Online and Wing Commander Online never fully materialized.

Yeah, long ago. I had my engeneering course to finish and kinda drifted away from the team.

Pioneer is another excellent project but it has only one yar or so of work. Those guys are doing an excellent job are restylizing the ships designs for better more modern apearence. Looking forward to that as well.

I tried this out Pilotasso and it's really impressive. I thought it would be professional, but it really goes one step beyond that! SO much effort has been put into it!

And so far it's been a little more in depth than the original games. For example, I flew out of formation for a few seconds during the second mission, and I failed the mission! That's a pretty neat addition.

I will definitely be playing more of it, and keeping an eye out on the progress of SAGA

When your finished with it, you can download the mission editor and do your own missions and campaign. The event editor there in allows almost infinite kind of events.

Actually I found that -extremely- annoying. Any sh*tcanning for such a thing should happen AFTER the mission.
